Age no barrier for epic cycle ride

Proving that age is no barrier to fitness, a group of cyclists with an average age of 55 (some are well into their 70s) set off from Broken Hill early in July for an epic, largely off-road trek, that will take them over 2,000 kms to Alice Springs. Some of them will then go on as far as Darwin – a journey of 3,718 kms. The 78 cyclists are re-enacting a ride made by Frederick Blakeley and the O'Neil brothers in 1908. The RTA has released plans for the Victoria Rd update from Drummoyne to Anzac Bridge, including a second bridge across Iron Cove. It is sketchy about bike facilities (natch) but does say the new bridge (their favoured option is western side of old bridge) could have a bike path slung underneath or on the deck....more

At the December committee meeting of NCM President Dorothy Pinder awarded Colin Keay a certificate and a club cycling jersey in recognition of the 30 years of voluntary service he committed to the organisation. HarbourLink – the ride in the sky

HarbourLink is the 1.6km long elevated cycleway/pedestrian way from the Sydney Harbour Bridge linking into St Leonards Park and Falcon St at the top of the Warringah Freeway, all at an average grade of only 3% (see Sydney Morning Herald, 16.12.07). Rail Trail for Dubbo?

The last few months have been busy for riders with Dubbo BUG. A proposal to Dubbo Council to utilise a disused railway line at Dubbo as a Rail Trail has seen business interests take priority and the old railway line cannot be used. Lane Cove Tunnel Update – Sep 2007

Work has finally commenced on the stage 2 of the Lane Cove Tunnel project, which includes completion of the shared pathway along Epping Road. This will connect the path built alongside the Gore Hill Freeway to that built west of Lane Cove River to provide a 7.5km pathway connecting the Lower North Shore to the North Ryde area. This should be completed by February 2008 as the contract requires Stage 2 to be completed within eleven months of the original tunnel opening....more

M2 Update - Easter 2007 (three months in ...)

The deadline passed and cyclists were dumped off the M2 Westbound between Lane Cove Road, Macquarie Park and Beecroft Road, Epping onto a very inferior detour route. The imperative was to push cyclists off rather than to complete the agreed works to a safe alternative. There’s a will… but where are the dollars

Dorrigo Urunga Bellingen BUG was a major contributor to the Bellingen Shire PAMP and Cycleway Plan and many of its ideas and suggestions were accepted in the final plan. When the Plan was adopted last October, local cyclists felt a large step had been taken in the right direction and that congratulations were due all around. M2 Update

As reported last month, the people of Sydney were advised on January 12 that the bicycle / breakdown lane on the M2 Motorway would be removed and cyclists redirected onto an alternative signposted route. While the original announcement stated that construction was expected to begin by late January and be completed in February, Transurban has clearly missed its construction start date as talks with Hornsby and Ryde Councils and Bike North are still underway. Cycle Access Denied - Hills M2 Motorway

Cyclists will be banned on the M2 westbound from Delhi Road to Beecroft Road from the end of January 2007. At this stage, the proposed alternative route is much slower, much hillier and involves multiple road crossings, making it potentially much less safe than the existing cycleway. Could we be seeing a repeat of the backward steps taken on William Street, Cross City Tunnel, etc, where the government scrapped existing bicycle facilities without offering sensible alternatives that are either adequate or safe?...more

Few Sydney people cycled back in the 1960s when the current Gladesville Bridge was built. Summit to the Sea

Fifteen riders from the Sapphire Coast BUG set out to ride from Thredbo to Tathra – from the Summit to the Sea - for what is becoming an annual event for this group of intrepid cyclists. Arriving at Thredbo on the Friday morning, they had sufficient time to go for a walk along the river, to the top of the mountain or do a warm-up ride to get a taste for what tomorrow may bring.
