Bicycle advocacy gaining momentum

14 August 2008

Cycling advocacy is comprised of activities that defend the rights of cyclists to use the public right-of-way roads for travel, to improve the conditions for cycling, and to make cycling more popular.

At one level, Bicycle NSW works with State & Federal government at a high level, focusing on policy setting and driving implementation of projects. Bicycle NSW also empowers Bicycle User Groups (BUGs) and Bicycle NSW Members to facilitate changes at a local level.

Werner Steyer from iBUG (Illawarra region) has recently joined Bicycle NSW as Advocacy Volunteer.

“The biggest concern raised by BUGs in their responses is in relation to cycling infrastructure and issues in dealing with councils on cycling infrastructure matters”, Werner told PushOn. “As most cycling infrastructure is provided by local councils and through the local RTA divisions, local BUGs and individual cyclists are the ones in the best position to lobby for specific local projects that will provide the most benefit to cycling.”

Werner and the team at Bicycle NSW have put together a list of questions that cycling advocates (i.e. you!) can put to candidates at the forthcoming Local Government elections (13 September 2008). These can be downloaded from www.bicyclensw.org.au/StateElection.asp 
