City says thanks

22 June 2009

To thank bicycle riders for using a sustainable form of transport, the City of Sydney held a free cycling breakfast on World Environment Day – Friday 5 June.

The City’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore MP, cycled to the breakfast with the NSW Minister for Planning Kristina Keneally, Bicycle NSW’s CEO Alex Unwin, and City Councillor John McInerney.

The official party were escorted by members of the Bike Bus (http://www.bikebus.org.au/) –an organised group of city commuters who ride to and from work together.

Held in Hyde Park, the breakfast included a live band, coffee, pastries and fruit, a free bike repair clinic provided by Sable and Argent and a combined BikeSydney/Bicycle NSW stall with tips and information on upcoming events. Give aways included fluoro vests and bike lights to promote visibility during the winter months, honker hooters to encourage bicycle riders to let others know when they are passing, and a new City cycling map.

In her address to the 150 strong crowd, Minister Keneally praised the City for its vision, particularly for the roll out of the 200km network the City is spending $70 million on over the next four years. The Lord Mayor thanked bicycle riders for their commitment to pedal power.

Since the opening of the King Street cycleway in the CBD in May (the first separated cycleway in Sydney), work has continued with final designs being prepared for Kent and College Streets in the City, Missenden Road Newtown and Union Street Pyrmont. Installation of a separated cycleway in Bourke Street Woolloomooloo has begun and preparing for the installation of a cycleway in Alexandria will begin within weeks with traffic calming works.

The City is also concurrently running a strong education campaign targeted at all road users, which includes behavioural messaging and free cycling courses.
