Kiama rewards another driver

TONY CAMILLERI KBUG*

14 July 2009

Cyclists from Kiama’s Bicycle User Group gathered at the Harbourside Brighton Restaurant after their regular Saturday morning ride a few weeks ago.

They were there to present Mrs. Hamley of Shoalhaven Heads with her prize of a $50 petrol voucher. Mrs Hamley simply waited behind a group of Kiama B.U.G. cyclists as they rode along Coolangatta Rd on the 10th May 2009 until it was safe to pass.

As a result of her courteous act her registration number was recorded and put into a database. Her registration number was then drawn randomly from the database at the end of the month.

With the aid of Kiama Council’s Road Safety Officer and Dapto Police, Mrs Hamley was contacted and invited to attend Saturday’s breakfast to receive her prize.

The S.H.A.R.E. & Win !! Scheme was designed by Kiama BUG to reward and encourage motorists who show courtesy to cyclists on the road.

With the backing of Kiama Council, Police and now Bicycle NSW, the scheme looks set to be rolled out to more regional areas and then into metropolitan areas as well.

Anyone who would like to get more active, feel better, lose weight, clear your head, save money on fuel costs and help our environment by cycling, is invited to contact Tony Camilleri on 0404497534. Novices are especially welcome in the group.

Winner Mrs Hamley, surrounded by grateful Kiama cyclists.
