Wonderful things can happen when 2 BUGS get together. SharkBike’s numbers multiplied considerably on our June ride when we were joined by 14 lovely cyclists from St George BUG. We surprised a few pedestrians on the Cooks River bike path as our long snake of 22 bikes cycled by.What a great ride. Nobody complained, everyone kept together. No bikes had any punctures or mechanical problems. Because of the distance and the limited amount of daylight, we had to keep up a good pace. One of the St George people helped us navigate through a couple of sloppy parks where the cycle path had been dug up for renovations. At Bicentennial Park we stopped for morning tea at Lilies café. We were soon on our way to Rhodes where a friendly cycling local showed us how to get through the building works and hook back up with the bike path over Ryde bridge. Every time we ride here I am amazed by the number of new home units that have popped up.Our group spirits were only temporarily dulled by the stairway over that horrible bridge with the staircases at Camellia. The ride through smelly old Camellia was very ordinary and so was our next break at McDonalds. The fearful leader didn’t want to risk taking precious cyclists along the main roads of Parramatta. Too many bad memories. It was still early but we had to get cracking in order to get back to Wolli Creek in daylight. We puffed back through Camellia and lugged our bikes up and down the sides of the the awful bridge. At Ermington, Bob from St George BUG suggested an alternate route back through Sydney Olympic Park that would miss the Rhodes construction site. We all agreed to give it a try. The ride was very interesting, flat and free of cars. In other words, we liked it a lot. At Bicentennial Park we all felt fresh enough to keep pedalling. After a brief ice cream stop at South Strathfield, we were back at Wolli Creek with an hour of daylight to spare. Thank you to Matthew who made an excellent human sign post and to Graeme B and Jenni who do a great job as our “sweep”. Thank you to St George BUG for their company and ride ideas and to our regular riders who have become our good friends. SharkBike has a social ride every month, which are listed in the Push On rides calendar. We look forward to welcoming you on a SharkBike ride.
