Bikes on Sydney Metro?

BOB MOORE LBUG*

19 August 2009

The planned first stage of the Sydney Metro will run from Rozelle to the City and Central and then eventually be extended west from Central via Leichhardt and Fivedock to Parramatta. There are vaguer plans to have a Metro link to Malabar as well, and maybe to the Northwest of Sydney. The planning documents all say that bicycles will be given priority (along with walking) as a means of access to the Metro stations, as in many other Metro systems around the world. This is welcome, but they admit that they do not know how many trips are likely to be made by bicycle to the Metro stations or even how to estimate this or what targets to set. So far there isnt a budget or overall plan to develop or improve bicyle routes to the stations, although there have been some talks with local Councils. With this attitude, the chances of cycling being a major means of access to the Metro are slim.

Also disappointing is their attitude to carriage of bicycles on the Metro, as is common on many Metros elsewhere and is of course the case here on the Sydney Rail network, the Light Rail and ferries. It would be a great loss if the Sydney Metro did not design their carriages and system to take bicycles at the outset, as it will be hard or impossible to retrofit later on.

LBUG and BIKESydney have made a submission to Sydney Metro and to the Premiers Council for Active Living. Anyone wishing to support this campaign is asked to write to Sydney Metro at PO Box Q286, QVB Post Office, NSW 1230 or email info@sydneymetro.nsw.gov.au or Fax: 02 8238 2796. .
