BUGs helping BUGs

WERNER STEYER IBUG*

26 October 2009

As a member of the Illawarra BUG it was always my hope that the BUG Council would be a central point for BUGs to discuss cycling issues, learn form the experience of others, help newer BUG to getting up to speed, work together to make NSW a better place for cycling and improve the interaction between BUGs and Bicycle NSW.

For this to happen we need to utilise all possible modes of communication, including face to face meetings, conference calls, email, post and PushOn and I feel further bureaucracy and compelling BUGs to attend meetings as part of affiliation requirements would further reduce participation and membership.

By using PushOn and email to distribute meeting minutes, agendas and motions complete with the supporting information both fore and against we would have the opportunity to discus the information with other Bug members before meetings. Voting should be open to all BUGs in a simular way to the upcoming BNSW annual meeting with online voting closing the day before the meeting.

As for the ongoing discussion on What Is A Bicycle User Group (BUG) we should firstly remember that we do not have copyright on the term Bicycle User Group or BUG and who really cares how often the group meets, how many rides it organises or how often it meets with council as long as the group supports and promotes the use of bicycles it’s a Bicycle User Group or BUG.

Making the BUG Council a success if now up to by sending your comments on how communication, voting should work and you thoughts on what is a BUG to the BUG Council at bugcouncil@bikenorth.org.au if you are a member of the BUG council email group or send it to me at wernersteyer@yahoo.com.au and I will forward it onto the BUG Council.

If you would like to be on the BUG council group email please provide Graeme Edwards the BUG council chairman at president@bikenorth.org.au your contact details.
