2009 Annual General Meeting

JENNY BURN, PRESIDENT BNSW*

26 October 2009

This year’s Annual General Meeting is being held on Wednesday 11th November from 6pm at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts (SMSA) 280 Pitt Street, Sydney, NSW 2000.

The latest details, including the Agenda and other material for the meeting are available for download from the AGM pages of our website at http://www.bicyclensw.org.au/content/annual-general-meeting

2009 Board Elections

This year’s AGM and Board election is the first that will be held according to the constitution adopted by the members at our 2008 AGM.

Details of the five candidates who have nominated this year for election to the Board of Bicycle NSW are also available for download from the AGM page of the website. There are four Board positions to be filled by election and we encourage all members to participate.

For the first time you will be able to vote online provided your membership is fully paid up to the date of the AGM or beyond. The independent website facility will be available to members from 9.00am Thursday 1 October until 6.00pm Tuesday 3 November 2009. Please check out the AGM pages of the website for details of how to vote on line (or by proxy) or to submit any questions for a response at the AGM. Naturally we welcome your attendance at the AGM itself.

The Pengana Goulburn to Citi Charity Ride – Sunday 20th September

A number of Board members were involved in this high profile fundraising event as riders or in support roles. The Bicycle NSW team raised over $12,000 for the Bicycle NSW Environmental Trust, and we anticipate that some of the funds raised will go to support the preparation of submissions to the NSW Transport Blueprint and other important policy initiatives that Bicycle NSW is currently pursuing (see below). We are very grateful for the support and donations from our members!

The City of Sydney Spring Cycle – Sunday 27th September

This year the event has enjoyed unprecedented media support, including a significant increase in publicity courtesy of our print media partner Fairfax Media. Total participant numbers were 10,841, up by close to 30% on last year’s total. Nearly 700 riders chose to start in Blacktown and Liverpool – making use of the Westlink M7 shared path and other bike paths through Western Sydney on the run into Sydney Olympic Park.

We are grateful for the support of a number of State Government Agencies including the NSW Police, the NSW RTA, CityRail, Sydney Olympic Park Authority, Ambulance Service of NSW and the Department of Premier and Cabinet in coordinating the efforts of the Agencies. Local governments along the routes also played a critical role in event delivery, in particular the City of Sydney who continue to show strong leadership in encouraging more people to take up sustainable transport on two wheels.

This year the event raised over $80,000 for the MS Society and the Oncology Children’s Foundation and would not have been possible without the hard work of our many event volunteers and the team from St John First Aid.

Last - but by no means least – a big thank you to the team at Bicycle NSW who worked long and hard to deliver another very successful event.

Bicycle NSW Submissions

Late in August, Bicycle NSW was invited to make a submission to the NSW Transport Blueprint. During September and early October Bicycle NSW, assisted by Dr Chloe Mason and many of our members and local BUGS, prepared submissions to the NSW Transport Blueprint, the Public Inquiry into a long term transport plan for Sydney and the Environmental Assessment for the Sydney Metro. Where available, copies of submissions appear on the Bicycle NSW website at http://www.bicyclensw.org.au/content/submissions-0

October 14th 2009 - National Ride to Work Day

This year more than 140,000 Australians journeyed to work by bike to celebrate national Ride to work day, and in NSW alone there were over 500 registered workplace coordinators organising breakfasts and other work based promotions. Bicycle NSW was represented by staff and Board members at breakfasts in Hyde Park in Sydney CBD, Macquarie Park in the north, Parramatta in the west and Bondi Junction in the east. Again, thank you to the scores of volunteers and helpers throughout the day.

The board always welcomes input and discussion with our members and we try to address any concerns and comments you may have. Please send any feedback to president@bicyclensw.org.au

Please note: the board’s role is to ensure that Bicycle NSW is well managed – we are not directly involved in day-to-day operations. Any questions or feedback on Bicycle NSW operations should be sent to the Chief Executive Officer via email to aunwin@bicyclensw.org.au or by phone (02) 9704 0810
