Climb the famous French Cols with Muggaccinos

PHIL JOHNSTON MUGGACCINOS (NOT AFFILIATED)

22 September 2010

Since 1976 Muggaccinos.com BUG has held a hilly endurance ride each Sunday, plus having cycled from almost 20 different NSW country towns involving longish day rides and revelry and merriment After Dark. The 1st of its Ten Commandments is “Hills are your Friends and Mountains are your Mates!”. Each fine Sunday morn’ a dozen or more cyclists ride a different published on-road route, usually exceeding 100 clicks, with shorter options, from Nth Turramurra, Hornsby or St Ives to Nosh Stops on Sydney’s satellite outposts eg Galston, Mt White, Palm Beach ferry to the Central Coast, Windsor, Kurrajong. Every second month, they either ride out West from Mt. Annan on Tour de Macarthur to Warragamba Dam and Picton, or start from Sutherland to ride the Royal National Park or down to Bulli and back.

Muggaccinos.com publishes a weekly on-line issue of “The Bullsheet” which provides a –

(a) detailed Ride Description of the pending Sunday ride; and

(b) comical post-ride “wrap-up” and pics of the previous Sunday’s ride.

This idiosyncratic BUG recently completed its 4th Linger & Die four day ride from Berowra to Wollombi, Paterson, Dungog and Morisset in the Hunter. Muggs’ 7th Annual King of the Mountain Challenge is from 8th to 14th Nov. Most participants camp at the Berry Showground in the pristine South Coast township which accesses a cluster of 11 tough climbs in the Southern Highlands, incl 18.8km Jamberoo Pass and Fountaindale Rd up Saddleback Mtn with a 22o section. 38 ardent hill climbers attended last Nov. and this Nov. one of the early bookings is a cyclist, Dennis, from California, intent upon tackling the Southern Highlands climbs.

Muggaccinos’ home page provides a URL to Muggaccinos two week ride tour to climb famous Montagnes in the Alps and Provence - late Aug 2011 which sets out comprehensive details of its two week sortie in late August 2011 to the Rhone Alps and Provence to climb Alpe d’Huez, Col de Galbier and Mont Ventoux ‘et al’, incl a shortlist of three hotels in each of the townships of Saint Jean de Maurienne in the Rhone Alps and Sault in the region of Provence. The burgeoning band of Muggaccinos’ cyclists who have already conquered Cols in Europe, are already planning to return to the Southwest of France in Aug 2013 to, après much ‘huffing and puffing’, proudly gaze down from Les Sommets of famous Montagnes in the Pyrénées, incl the two assents to the revered Col du Tourmalet.
