Show Motorists Your Butt

Werner Steyer, Cycling motorist  IBUG*; 11 September 2007

As a motorist I’m astounded at the lack of consideration shown by us as cyclists to making ourselves visible to motorists from behind, while we go to great length in selecting cycling shirts that make us look cool in the coffee shop and for that magazine cover photo. Unfortunately when it come to making ourselves seen from behind we cover our most visible feature, yes our butts, in black Licra to blend in with the Road, even many of our favourite cycling shirts don’t have bright lower panels or pockets. Going through clothing racks in my local cycling shops there was no end to the selection of black cycling nicks but no sign of bright colours, many of the fancy cycling shirts have bright patterned fronts but are drab and colourless in the area most seen from behind, even some of the wet weather gear has drab coloured back panels. While the high visibility clothing worn by Road workers and alike is designed for Homo-erectus where the upper torso is the most prominently seen feature, the same however doesn’t apply to Homo-cyclist where our butts are our most visible asset. Let’s all remember that it’s us that will feel the pain of not being seen by a motorist, so let’s show motorists our butts’ covered in bright colours.
