Councils teach cyclists to be dangerous

Daniel Endicott, Newcastle Bike Ecology Centre  ; 17 December 2007

Summer is the perfect time to go for a stroll along the lovely foreshore pathways, and along the Throsby creek waterways. The sun is in your face, the wind in your hair until you get "buzzed" by a cyclist passing you too fast and too close. Narrow on-road "bike lanes" cause cyclists to get used to fast cars passing them too close. Any wonder on shared walking/bike paths that some cyclists pass people too close and too fast? They are only doing what the council and RTA have taught them. They have learned that getting squeezed is “socially” acceptable, so they ride on shared paths in a similar way to riding on the road. Just like on the roads, passing other people too closely is an accident waiting to happen. So the next time you are strolling down a shared pathway don’t whinge and complain about the dangerous cyclists. Put your frustrations to good use and complain to the dangerous council. Please write to council to remove the dangerous narrow on-road "bike lanes". Note: Almost all Newcastle "bike lanes" are not real bike lanes, and are not mandatory to ride in them.
