I've lost count of the number of submissions that I've sent to National Parks, only to have them ignored. Bikes don't damage wilderness and especially when it's not wilderness at all but legal fiction wilderness
- cycles are on roads, not in contact with the bush. NPWS long ago stopped pushing the 'damage to environment' 'reason' to stop bikes (and it was just an excuse, they, after all, drive 4WDs, graders, bulldozers, etc along these roads). Now they just don't give a reason, but it appears that they simply have a philosophical 'bicycle are inappropriate' in wilderness attitude. This is like arguing about religion. Over the past ~15 years, the kms of fire trails that are legally open to cyclists has probably halved and generally, what are left are short trails on the fringes. Seems only walkers are allowed to appreciate wild places any more. |
