Blue Mountains priorities

Christine Laurence  ; 14 July 2008

Blue Mountains City Council has prepared a very comprehensive bike plan. It's a great piece of work and all staff and community members who poured their time and dedication into it are to be warmly congratulated. To build all the paths in the plan would cost a mere $4.5million. Council has agreed to put $50,000 per year towards it for the next 13 years. The RTA will match it. DOTARS are putting in $50,000 for the next two years. This comes to a total of $1.4 million. Council is planning to seek funding for the other $3.1 million elsewhere. Council is currently investigating spending $400,000 on a commuter car park at Glenbrook that would hold 20 cars, the equivelant of 8 years of bike money! If you'd like to make comments on the plan, or urge Council to reconsider their priorities, please do so. http://www.bmcc.nsw.gov.au/home/publicexhibitionbikeplan/ -- submissions close July 17 The $400,000 being considered for a car park could be much better used providing bike paths and bike parking at Glenbrook Station, and would serve more people. And of course, we have the RTA. I understand that they spent $90million on the underpass/overpass thingie into Leura. They too need to be encouraged to reconsider their priorities!
